Service Dogs: are defined as dogs that are individually trained to do work or perform tasks for people with disabilities. Examples of such work or tasks include guiding people who are blind, alerting people who are deaf, pulling a wheelchair, alerting and protecting a person who is having a seizure, reminding a person with mental illness to take prescribed medications, calming a person with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) during an anxiety attack, or performing other duties. Service animals are working animals, not pets. The work or task a dog has been trained to provide must be directly related to the person’s disability. Dogs whose sole function is to provide comfort or emotional support do not qualify as service animals under the ADA.
Emotional Support Dogs: ESA is short for Emotional Support Animal. An Emotional Support Animal is an animal that provides therapeutic support to its owner and is protected by the Air Carriers Access Act (ACAA) and by the Fair Housing Authority (FHA). A person must have a letter from a licensed mental health professional in order to legally classify a ESA.
Therapy Dogs: your pet can be of therapeutic value and help people live a better quality of life by incorporating therapy and companion animals in their lives. If you pet has a calm temperament and loves being touched by other humans, it can surely be of help in your locality. Therapy dogs must be calm and accepting of human touch. A trained therapy dog is helpful to healing when visiting nursing homes, schools & hospitals. Dogs do not have ASA access permission…they must be approved access by the proprietor of the establishment.
